We are very excited about a plan we're working on with the Town of Goderich's Environmental Action Committee and the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority. We would like to plant approximately ten native trees in Victoria Park, in coordination with the Parks Department. We hope this would be the first step in increasing the number of trees in town.
If you go by the park these days, you'll see it's lively with kids tearing through the splash pad, families picnicking, and the pickleball players (with visions of Olympic gold, I'm sure!). Adding more trees to this open location will not only increase the amount of shade for these users but trees also have substantial health, environmental, and financial benefits (air quality improvements, enhanced attractiveness, stormwater floor retention, carbon sequestration, and so on).
Now what can YOU do? We hope to have larger tree planting events in the future when we can all be planting trees together as a group without any restrictions - but for now, we do still need your support!
We will be proposing this tree planting plan (see our plan here as well as our visual plan below) at the next Town Council meeting. We would love to have lots of members attend to show support for more trees in our town! The Town Council meeting on Monday, August 16 at 4:00 PM. You can see more information about attending the Council meeting on Zoom here.
If you are unable to attend, we would also appreciate having more member names on the proposal document itself. If you would like to have your name listed in support, email us and we can set that up!
We are also looking for donations that will go directly to purchasing these trees. If you are feeling generous, please email us and we can coordinate a donation pick-up as either a cheque or cash. If you cannot donate at this time, we completely understand.
Let's get together and put down some deep roots in a shady space with long-lasting benefits!
